I attended the Louisville Sportbikes 4th annual Trackday at Putnam Park this past Sunday.

I don't think there could've been better weather because it was high 70's and not a cloud in the sky.

My first experience at the track was pretty damn awesome. I sat up all my stuff in the paddock, registered, got tech'd, and waited for Novice call.

The first of 7 20min sessions was a control rider showing us the race line and getting familiar with the track. The second was similar but half way through they turned us loose. All the sessions from there on out were show up and go. Of the laps my girlfriend timed, with an iPhone, I ended up going 1:26.

There were a few red flags were someone ran off track and one were someone spun out and lowsided. I was behind that guy and his rear tire spun up and he went down after exiting turn 7.

I now know I need better brakes and a suspension set up.

I have to say that unless I'm just totally bored and have $40 to blow I'm done with autocross because I'm not renewing my SCCA membership. All my racing funds will be put towards trackdays. So if anyone wants my race tires or knows anyone that wants a set of take offs with minimal wear let me know.

Ok I am thinking about starting to autocross my car next year and was wanting to get some info/guidance on what I should do. Im not sure what class I would be in now with the mods I have done to my car and was wondering what class I would fall into.
2005 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V
Everything performance wise is stock except:
XS Racing 4-2-1 Header and Midpipe
Magnaflow Cat Back with 28'' Magnaflow muffler
Skunk 2 Racing Lowering Springs
I have autocrossed my car one time before when it was stock and had a blast just wondering what I might need to acquire and save up for next season.
Thanks

I have been thinking of getting into autocross next season but am new and dont know what class i would be in and what determines what class i would be in. First off I figured i would list my car and upgrades.

1987 VW Jetta
1.8L 8v
32/36 progressive Weber carburetor
4-1 race header
278 cam
P&P head (supposedly dont know for sure)
Custom short shifter
Weighted shifter rod

Sleeve coilover kit (on its way)
Kyb-gr2 shocks
195/50/15 falken tires
Welded in cross bar in truck
Front strut tower brace in front

no carpet in car

Thats all (i think) and i know some will say the sleeve coilover kit maybe junk but my boss said it would be a cost effictive setup until i can afford full coilovers and he used to work for koni's race development division so I trust his word.

Thanks for any input you can give me.

I see many misconceptions about going to an open road course driving event on this site, so I've...

I see many misconceptions about going to an open road course driving event on this site, so I've started this thread to calm the fears of the many people who are interested in getting out their to have fun but may have some sort of reservation about it.

WHAT DOES MY CAR NEED? IT'S NOT PREPARED TO DO ALL OF THIS STUFF!

This is one of common mistakes that people make. They think they have to have a tube chassis open wheel racer with 600 hp and brakes the size of an extra large pizza just to even get on a road course. The truth of the matter is that if you have a car that is up to par on maintenance, has some decent tires, and at least 50% of your brake pads left, you're going to be fine! Yes, there is some added stress to the car, but not so much that the original equipment wasn't designed for it. It's not uncommon to see stock cars out on track running around with some of the fastest cars out there. In fact, most of these cars are driven to and from the track. These people have realized that it doesn't take a fully prepared race car to participate and so should you!

IT COSTS TOO MUCH!!!

Wrong again! All that money you might be spending on your other automotive outlets are probably costing you just as much as a track event would. Sure it's a bit less convenient because the track isn't in your back yard, but the road trip is part of the experience. Hanging out with friends and meeting new people is a great thing when it comes to fostering motorsports connections and even basic human relationships in general. The die hards out there will sometimes spend the night splitting a room with another track-going guy that they've never met in person before just to cut down on some money. Bottom line is that the money will become one of your last thoughts after you get out on track. The biggest thing is just to get out there!

I WON'T KNOW ANYONE.

Bull! At just about every one of the local track days in the area you'll find at least one of your fellow DriveLex members participating. But again, this goes back to the notion above that meeting new people is part of this hobby. After all, you joined this forum to meet new people, right?

I WON'T BE FAST ENOUGH

Fast enough for whom? The only one holding you back here is you! These open lapping days that I'm talking about are put in place so that you can gain seat time and become a better driver. How are you going to get better if you don't get out there and try it?!

OK, SO WHAT WILL I NEED?

Depending on the organization you run with, you'll probably only be required to have a fire-retardant helmet and a long-sleeved shirt. After that, you need a tech form to ensure that your car and maintenance are all in order to get out on track and then you're set. It's really THAT easy. Some groups even have rental helmets if you're not ready to take the plunge and buy one for yourself. That can be a big purchase, so make sure you check out the site sponsors for special hook ups on quality safety equipment!

BUT ISN'T IT DANGEROUS?

Sure! I'm not saying it's not... but so is driving to work every day, eating your favorite meal, or even rolling out of bed. I think that you'll find yourself safer and more confident on track with other skilled drivers than you will fighting rush hour traffic on Nicholasville Road. While there is certainly an opportunity for a disastrous outcome, nothing in life isn't like that and no one will ask you to push harder than you're comfortable with.

Open track events are an awesome opportunity for you to gain a wealth of knowledge about not only your car, but also yourself as a driver. You have the opportunity to flex that vehicular muscle you've been building up and it's 100% legal. I won't put down other forms of motorsports, but I can easily say that this is the most fun I've had in my car at any time. I've done shows, drag racing, autocross, and even car stereo competitions, but for me nothing has even come close to the rush I get when I'm out on track.

The thing that I'm trying to get across here is that very typically the only thing holding back a person from getting out on a road course is himself. When you realize that it only takes very minor equipment and zero driving experience, you'll be set to get out there and start having the most fun that you can have with your clothes on! If you have any questions, I'm here to help. Hopefully this thread will make you realize that there is a wealth of driving opportunity sitting within arms reach.

Ok! I've bugged Mike to no end on this one... Considering building up a fully-track-prepared car in the off-season. I am willing to spend "some" money on setup and build-out. The question is... what is the best, cost-effectve or at any cost vehicle platform to start with????

Some starting points... A) Porsche Cayman S (my bias :-) ) - too expensive to acquire and for parts B) E36 M3 - cost effective starting point and lots of parts available C) E46 M3 - Less cost effective, better looking, who knows... ANY GREAT IDEAS?

Someone convinces me of a good direction that I take, I'll throw in a little something as a prize :-)
